The Elizabethan era was the period of time in which Queen Elizabeth the first, reigned over England. This time period was also known as the Golden age in English history. This was a time of many changes and development to the society in which they live. Queen Elizabeth was known as the best monarch, because she was very wise and powerful. She ruled the Elizabethan era for 45 years and during this time was the height of the English Renaissance and the time of the development of English poetry, literature and the first theatres we formed. It was an extravagant yet brutal age.

Theatres-
The first theatres in the Elizabethan era were called playhouses, they were private small roofed sections for the rich and public outdoor areas for the poor or middle class, famous theatres include The Globe, The Rose, The Swan and The Fortune.

Were you were seated in the theatres determined your social status. The wealthy were seated higher up on the balconies or the box and poorer people would stand on the ground.
Costumes-
The Elizabethan Era was a period in English history dominated by the Class structure. People who lived in the Elizabethan era were not allowed to wear whatever they liked. It did not matter how wealthy they were - the fabric, and even the of their clothes were dictated by their rank, status or position. Therefore the costumes in the plays also imitated social status. During this time, only men were allowed to play female roles so the costumes had to be layered. Undergarments include petticoats, corset, bodice, pantyhose, farthingale and gowns. Over garments included a dublet, separated sleeves, breeches, belt, ruff, cloak shoes and a hat.

The most famous of the play writers from the Elizabethan era would of course be Shakespeare, but there are also Christopher Marlow (1564 - 1593), Francis Beaumont (1584 - 1616), John Fletcher (1579 - 1625), Thomas Middleton (1580 - 1627) and Thomas Kyd (1558 - 1594). The most common forms of play performed were comedy plays and tragedy plays, however there were also Jigs (which were sexual plays) and history plays.
